The AI Visibility and Control Our Customers Asked For: LUMINATE by DNSFilter™

We’ve listened to our customers, and this year one subject has come up more than any other: AI.
Most of my conversations are with one of two groups: Security and IT leaders who buy from us directly, or the MSPs who run DNSFilter across their clients. Whichever group I’m talking to, the conversation gets to AI quickly, and the questions sound remarkably alike.
From security leaders, it sounds like this: We know AI is being used across the business. We just can’t see where, by whom, or whether it’s a tool we ever approved. We need a way to allow the tools we trust without opening the door to everything else.
From MSPs, it sounds like this: Every client is asking us about AI, and we need an answer that doesn’t require another tool, agent or console. When an AI tool causes a problem, the MSP is the one who absorbs it.
Increasingly from both, I have heard that AI isn’t only in employees’ hands anymore. Agents are now acting on their behalf, and teams want to know where those agents are going.
Both groups want the same thing: To say yes to AI without losing sight of it.
That's what LUMINATE by DNSFilter™ is built to answer. AI Governance & Controls is one of its five product suites, and it starts where every AI tool starts: The DNS request. Every AI tool in use across an organization comes into view, so teams can see which tools people are using and how much, then set which ones are allowed. The approved tools stay open, while the rest are blocked.
Agents are covered the same way. They still have to look up where they’re going, so their connections show up in the same place as everything else, under the same policy.
The way I'd frame AI is with two questions, and they work whether you're a CISO or an MSP: What AI can't you see, and what AI can't you control?
- "Can't see" is usually which AI tools are actually in use, who’s using them and what they’re connecting to.
- "Can't control" is usually the gap between the tools you’ve approved and the ones people find on their own.
LUMINATE by DNSFilter™ answers both questions from the same place.
For a security team, that means AI governance doesn’t arrive as another project. It’s a suite on the platform you already run: No second agent, no new console, no migration for your users. Safe traffic still resolves in 6.3 milliseconds in North America, so nobody on your team notices we're there.
For MSPs, it's the same idea across a whole client book. Give every client the same view of AI use, set policy once, and adjust it client by client without touching the rest. The AI question every client is asking becomes a service you can deliver, not another tool you have to manage.
AI Governance & Controls sits alongside four other suites on the same engine: Advanced Filtering, Behavior Analytics, Encryption & Privacy, and Threat Intelligence. Start with the suites you need, and when you’re ready for the next, it runs on the same platform.
LUMINATE by DNSFilter™ works alongside the security tools you already run. It's the earliest layer in the chain, and it makes everything behind it work better.
If you're already a DNSFilter customer or partner, your account team is happy to walk you through what's new, starting with AI, whenever you're ready.
To the customers and partners who kept bringing us their AI questions: Thank you. That's what we built against.

We Built One Engine Instead of Five: Inside LUMINATE by DNSFilter™
Today LUMINATE by DNSFilter™ launches from the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square. My product and engineering teams built it, and I want to share how, because the decisions we made along the way explain why it works the way it does.

LUMINATE by DNSFilter™ and the Bet We Made 11 Years Ago
When I co-founded DNSFilter in 2015, we made one bet: stop threats at the very first moment, before anything happens. Today, we're taking that bet further than we ever have.
